friday list
It's been a long time since I've done one of these. A list of things I love or have discovered that I think you'll like too.
If perfection or comparison is holding you back read this
I'm re-reading Eat, Pray, Love. Have you read it? Did you love it? Hate it?
Fancy some dairy-free, gluten-free Italian food? Mamacino's got that sorted.
If you're visiting Sorrento on the Mornington Peninsula enjoy lunch, dinner or a glass of wine at Cakes and Ale - my favorite little bistro there that I also do the marketing for.
I've been asked to submit my story of being a mum without my mum here for this beautiful site Keeping Mum, if you or someone you know would like to contribute their story visit the site for details.
Miso + maple glazed eggplant sounds good to me!
Wanna brew your own kombucha? Check this out.
A friend and I make a pact sometimes to not talk about lunchboxes when we meet up lol. I have to confess I find the whole thinking and talking about what to put in lunchboxes so boring! Brenda has come to the rescue and put together this great list of 17 sweet and easy lunchbox recipes.
We all need a night off from cooking sometimes, if you live in the Elsternwick area you can call into What's 4 Dinner (250 Glen Eira Rd. Elsternwick) and pick up a home style meal you don't have to cook! What's 4 Dinner and Dody Oliver Catering are my other marketing clients. Dody is a mum of three and dynamic business woman who wants people to eat well but understands not everyone makes time to do so. Her meals are cooked from scratch using real food and nothing else. Bayside customers can order online and have meals delivered.
If you're on Instagram come follow me @wholefoodmama and if you'd like to see my husband's beautiful photography you can find it @riverandsol
We set off on a seven hour drive tomorrow across a rough red dirt road on our way back to Darwin. It's been a big six weeks here on the Gove Peninsula. 'See' you when we get there!
Have a great weekend xo

I'll start with a big happy birthday Mamacino! You've written some wise words here.
To Her Core is a fun new wholefood read
Now that we're renovating (!) I've been devouring inspiration via magazines, books and these little videos
Boho kitchens. Can you see me in any of these?
Do you have a wardrobe full of clothes and nothing to wear? Check out Brenda's solution.
How magical is this mermaid photograph?
My husband Pete is a professional photographer and author, we're having a festive sale over on his online gallery his books 'Point Nepean' and 'Fire and the Story of Burning Country' are available for $35 each including postage anywhere in Australia. Pete can sign the books and include a personalised message and there's still time to order and receive before Christmas! Lots of lovely photographic prints available too. Visit River&Sol gallery.
Happy weekending everyone. I hope you're enjoying all that is good about December and the year drawing to a close. Or perhaps this time of year makes you dream of hitting that wide open road :)

BPA free is not all it's cracked up to be
I found Orangette via Pip and could have stayed up all night reading
And then I found Kate Christensen via Orangette and if it weren't for my new rule of going to bed before midnight I would have been up reading til sunrise!
If you're looking to up your professional social media skills, I've recently been recommended Tim Martin's courses...on my wishlist for next year
Am I the only one who hasn't seen The Dressmaker yet? Also on my wishlist
I'm looking forward to spending some time with my Nan on the weekend.

If you read one post in this list it must be this one from Veggie Mama about...superannuation eeek. It's good I promise. And fun. Yes, I said fun. (Only Veggie Mama could make superannuation fun).
How does she do it? A great series from Nic at Planning with Kids
My kind of cooking class
Please keep bay fish on the menu
What's not to love about Chocolate brazil nut truffles with figs and orange zest?
Matthew Evans has a new cookbook out and I love the look of his recipe for yoghurt and raspberry cake with elderflower syrup (for me maybe with a little less sugar and made with spelt instead of wheat!)
Anyone been to Nourish cafe in Bundaberg, Queensland? I'm hearing good things.
Onya Magazine is a good read
One for the bloggers
Happy weekending everyone. I hope you've got something fun planned. See you next week! x

(A desert flashback: Uluru)
The rain is falling here this morning. Thunder is rumbling over too. Seems kind of fitting for Halloween.
Do you celebrate Halloween? It seems to be catching on in Australia more and more. Despite people saying 'it is such an American thing' it is actually a Celtic tradition. There are a couple of aspects to the whole Halloween tradition one is the acknowledgement of All Saint's Day (November 1st) where the veil to the spirit world is said to be at its thinnest and the pumpkin thing is explained by it being a celebration of the end of the season's harvest. You can read more about the origins and traditions here.
I've recently been introduced to Terri-Anne Leske's blog Carrotsticks and Cravings and wanted to share Terri-Anne's new cookbook with you. Terri-Anne is an Aussie ex-pat living in Singapore with her young family. Terri-Anne is mum to 3, including twins! And somehow she finds time to create beautiful recipes and has put her first cookbook together. I'll be sharing one of her recipes in the coming weeks.
Speaking of cookbooks, have you seen Mamacino's latest ebook Chocolate Indulgence? Beautiful recipes and photography all by Mamacino.
If you're looking for a little less indulgence and in fact would like to lose 'those last 5 kilos' click on over to Brenda Janscheck and Naomi Judge's BreakThrough program, enrolments close tomorrow night. I love the holistic approach of this program it is not purely about calories in calories out, it considers digestion, hormones, metabolism, the quality of food and basically the quality of life you are living! For all those reasons I am an affiliate of BreakThrough. Take a look here.
Broad beans and haloumi are a good match
So are sumac, roasted eggplant, lentils and cherries
If you're in the mood for a Halloween cocktail try this witch's brew
Excellent meditation tips from Veggie Mama
Meet Barbara Stanny she has some wise words about money
And on that note, I'm off to prepare a dinner feast for my little trick or treaters tonight and prepare for attending a house auction today eeek! Better find the rescue remedy. Fingers crossed there'll be cause for champagne. When is there not cause for champagne?
Happy weekending everyone xx

I'm reading two books at once, gearing up for the NT writer's festival. I can relate to much in Lorna Hendry's Wrong Way Round, I'm reading it to River and Sol we're loving it. And I'm only a few pages in to Kim Mahood's craft for a Dry Lake.
Here's a practical and positive approach to supporting asylum seekers in Melbourne.
New study released today shows the negative impact of eating a junk food diet on the brain.
Why depriving your kids of toys is a great idea
Have you made Georgia's healthy chocolate, coconut almond bars? They're one of my favorites.
I found this an inspiring read, one woman following her calling.
What have you been cooking lately? What's on for the weekend? It is my birthday on sunday!
"Two more sleeps and you'll be turning 24 right mum?" asked Sol. Bless him. More like 41 :)
I'm looking forward to it. Have a great weekend x

Have I told you lately how much I love Alice Springs?
The day we arrived here I was already thinking about how we'll be sad to leave. We're not leaving for a while but it has cast a spell on me as has happened to many, many people before me.
During the week Pete dropped us in town to go to the library, twenty minutes later after he'd driven off I realised the school book bag was still in the car. Instead of maths and writing we did a walking art gallery tour, spending time at Papunya Tula
On Friday night we spent time at Desert Mob to see some beautiful traditional dancing. I'll write more about that next week.
And enjoyed good coffee and friendly service from The Coffee Horse
I've added this cookbook to my collection since I've been here, I want to make so many of the recipes, I don't have an oven here though so some will have to wait til I'm home
I'm loving the Artful Parent, so many great ideas for art with kids
Winter is over here in Australia but for anyone still fending off the common cold here is a great post from Georgia, Top Five Foods to Reduce Mucus
I've mentioned it before but I'm really looking forward to the NT Writer's Festival
I've taken SO many photos this week, can't wait to share them with you. I'm hunting up recipes too!
I hope you're all having a beautiful weekend x

sunday
I owe you a weekend reading list and stills collection so I've rolled them together!
You see I've been busy washing sheets and towels. All 3 of my guys went down with gastro since Friday. So much fun.
Anyway, we're back on track starting with this post.
During the week we had the privilege of heading out of town with two Arrerntre Elders to spend time with their family sitting under the shade of trees on one of the Elders homeland. How spectacular is that country? River and Sol loved every minute, from eating kangaroo tail to playing footy with their new friends.
Friday night I had the opportunity to meet Rosie Batty and personally tell her what a remarkable woman she is for the work she is doing to prevent domestic violence in Australia. Next week I will write a post about the evening. Join Rosie's Never Alone campaign. Together we can make a difference.
Check out the Desert Divas looking forward to seeing them at the Bush Band Bash next month.
If you're pulling your hair out because your kids are fussy eaters, or you can't bear to hear 'what's for dinner?' one more time, then Brenda Janscheck and Alexx Stuart's 21 day e-course THRIVE could be the one for you. For more details or to sign up go here, registrations close midnight tonight and the course kicks off tomorrow.
Now if you'll excuse me I've got some catching up on sleep to do! More soon. x

A gorgeous blog find, if you are following GAPS you'll like this
Love this
I thought Melbourne had a lot of festivals and exhibitions but I think Alice Springs has taken the lead. Let's see, there's the Desert Song festival coming up, The Alice Desert Festival and Desert Mob and that's just skimming the surface!
Pete and the boys and I were lucky to spend a day at Akeyulerre this week, an Aboriginal healing centre here in Alice. You can read more about Akeyulerre social enterprise and healing products made from traditional bush medicine here.
We've also been fortunate to spend time with MK Turner a respected Arrernte woman and author of a beautiful book Iwenhe Tyerrtye - what it means to be an Aboriginal person.
I'll be talking more about Thrive over the coming week, a fantastic new e-course for Raising Kids Who Love Real Food. Put together by two wholefood mamas and health coaches, Alexx Stuart and Brenda Janscheck. You can read more about it and sign up here. (I'm an affiliate which means I get a small commission if you sign up via my link, just so you know!)
I support domestic violence campaigner Rosie Batty and her online campaign Never Alone, they've had a win this week with Tasmania committing to a respectful relationships program being introduced in Government schools from kindergarten to Year 12. Join Rosie's campaign and help put pressure on the other states to do the same.
Have a great weekend everyone. X

We're here in Alice Springs! And wow the desert has already woven its magic around us. I am being amazed by the miracle that anything at all grows here! So much red dirt and sun. I can't even imagine what the heat would be like here in summer. Alice is so rich with arts, culture, community and at this time of year, the perfect amount of sunshine.
Today River and Sol and I spent the day at the Olive Pink Botanic Gardens where the annual desertSMART ecofair began today and runs all weekend.
Pete and I are very much looking forward to hearing Rosalie Kunoth-Monks speak on Sunday at the National Pioneer Women's Hall of Fame
River is doing an assignment on megafauna this term ("They're big animals mum," Sol tells me), so I think a trip to the Alice Springs Desert Park will happen soon
We joined the Alice Springs library today - I love public libraries - and there is so much on offer there including A Young Writer's Group for children and young people aged 7 - 15 which will be perfect for River
And for my little emerging artist Sol we'll be heading to the Araluen Cultural Precinct to soak up the colours and stories of the paintings
On the food front I'm looking forward to visiting Kungkas Can Cook
The photo above was taken at the Coober Pedy Bakery where despite its basic shopfront and modest decor you'll find surprisingly good coffee and er, top notch French pastries! Coober Pedy is known for opal mines not cuisine so I wasn't expecting this find.
I'm looking forward to sharing our Alice Springs adventure with you. Happy weekend everyone xo

Well, we made it. Week one, term 3 done.
Can you believe it is snowing in Queensland?
So sad to read about the tragic passing of Nick Cave's son.
Wishing I had bought Mamacino's birthday party ebook before I made so many chocolatey things for River's early birthday celebration tomorrow.
I've made Sonia's healthy chocolate crackles.
And Mona's chocolate bliss balls. And we're having chocolate cake! Can you overdo chocolate?
Once we get through all the chocolate, we're heading to Melbourne to celebrate one of my dear long time friend's 40th birthday at the Afghan Gallery restaurant. I was reminiscing about celebrating her 21st the other day, I'm feeling old now!
A friend and I were chatting during the week about books we love, we both read pretty much only non-fiction, I love Joyce Maynard's memoir 'At Home in the World'. I discovered it when I was just starting out having my writing published, it was a very timely read.
Speaking of starting out, my friend Alarna is a talented graphic designer who is just starting out on Instagram showcasing her divine wedding stationery designs take a look @arch_and_co
And while we're on the topic of talented friends :) how yummy does my friend Lucy's recipe for spicy sweet potato and lentil soup look?! Perfect for this Arctic cold snap we're having.
Still life paintings, yes or no? (I didn't paint that one by the way) I love Margaret Olley
Think of me tomorrow standing in the park in the middle of winter, with a pack of kids kicking the footy to celebrate my footy mad son turning 9. Brrrrrr! We're usually away for River's birthday so this year I said he can have a party before we go. I know Mother of the Year :) he's worth it.
Have a great weekend. Stay warm, or go somewhere warm!
Thanks for visiting here, god knows there's no shortage of blogs out there to visit so I do appreciate you all stopping by.

One of the many hats I wear includes looking after the media and marketing for my favorite bistro here in Sorrento, Cakes and Ale, so I thought it is only right that I tell you for the whole month of July at dinner you can enjoy Milawa organic free range duck served 3 ways: starter duck broth, entree duck breast salad and main confit duck leg on potato rosti $55 per person. Book your next date night ph: 5984 4995. (Closed Tuesday).
Jody Vassallo's book Beautiful Food has been popping up on my radar lately. Do you have it?
Speaking of cookbooks, check this out
Work your way through this list: The 50 Best Food Memoirs
If you know anyone who wants to learn whole food basics and get to Torquay on Saturday August 1st, tell them to check Mamacino and Lia Burton's class.
Amidst all the fun of the school holidays I was lucky enough to have lunch this week with Joey and Heidi.
It's a long way off for me, however I'm not looking forward to the day I go through this bittersweet time
Have I told you we leave for Alice Springs in two weeks?! Not much to do really to get ready lol.
If you feel like baking apple pie this weekend try my friend Mette's delicious recipe
Have a great weekend and if you haven't already come say hi on Instagram and Facebook

School holidays are here! Now, what are we going to do for two weeks?!
I remember Circus Oz from my childhoood and they're still going!
For some fun and FREE things to do, Antipodes bookstore in Sorrento is hosting a pop up event Stories to Tell, and the National Gallery of Victoria has a really fun exhibition for kids
Origami?
This is pretty much the only post you need to read about the school holidays. Thankyou Maxabella.
Do you read bbb?
I go through phases with blog reading sometimes I become obsessive with one or two blogs checking in everyday, reading old posts when I have time, I'm currently going though this with Veggie Mama , Gourmet Girlfriend and Meet Me at Mikes, I feel a bit stalker-ish!
We're heading off to Alice Springs later this year for Pete's work and I've been thinking about that trip. I haven't been to Alice before have you?
I had another beautiful dinner at Cakes and Ale during the week, if you live near Sorrento you really should book your next date night dinner there, you should also know that I do the marketing for them! But I wouldn't be recommending anything to you unless I really love it and think there's a damn good chance you will too.
Ok, lights out time for me. As much as I'm enjoying the quiet of my sleeping family I better get some sleep before they're awake and all go go go again.
Happy weekend everyone x

If you need some exercise in all this cold weather, turn this up loud and dance around your lounge room
Chat 10 Looks 3 Leigh Sales and Annabel Crabb's podcast is on my list to listen to
Looking forward to visiting Mister Jones this school holidays
It's taken me a while to embrace the chia pudding but I'm there now! Check out Amy Chaplin's vanilla version
Hmmm if you're looking for a new way to entice your family to eat cauliflower then these cauliflower felafel veggie burgers might be the ticket
I'm going to finish on a heavy note but a really important one. I want to ask you to take a few minutes to click over and sign up to Rosie Batty's Never Alone campaign. I believe in the power of one. I believe Rosie is the woman to lead change in ensuring that women and children in Australia are protected from family violence. Let's use social media for the powerful positive medium it can be and support Rosie to make this change.
See you next week! x

I've been going through computer files and photos this weekend making space for new files and new photos. I took this photo almost a year ago in my friend Robin's kitchen. So many photos that haven't seen the light of day. I find keeping on top of digital photo filing so time consuming. You too?
I signed up to do Anna Lovind's free mini ecourse on creative brilliance. Without giving too much away, I love what she says in week 2 of the course - "everything starts with no", essentially it is about creating space in your life to be creative and guarding your time by saying no.
In case you missed the link in my post on Thursday, I can relate to Kate Northrup's most read post 'It's not going to turn out the way you thought'
Still time to enrol in my Blogging for Beginners course next Saturday at Sorrento Community Centre. I'd love to meet you! We'll cover all the basics to get you started, choosing a blogging platform, finding your topic/niche, building your audience, social media, design elements, photo tips, organising your content and touch on monetisation too.
Saturday March 21st, 10am-3pm. cost: $60. Phone to book: 5984 3360
Still in Sorrento, I've been doing some marketing work for Cakes and Ale my favorite local place for delicious food and wine. It was a favorite place before it became my job, I'm pretty lucky I've tended to work that way my whole life doing things I genuinely love to do, hasn't been a fast track to fortune mind you but satisfying none the less. I'm rambling now, if you want to receive a beautiful recipe from Cakes & Ale chef Leilani Wolfenden straight to your inbox each month click the link and sign up to their newsletter.
I'm going to the Problogger photography and blogging workshop on Tuesday in Melbourne. Can't wait for a 'day off' in town. Anyone else going?
Sorry for the brief list this weekend but I am determined to stop going to bed at midnight so I will finish here.
Here's to a great week! Only two more weeks until school holidays. Again. How does that happen so quickly?! Looking forward to this term being over. Bring on the holidays. x

rocket harvest
It's a long weekend here so I feel quite fine about posting this on a Monday :)
A couple of weeks ago my five year old, Sol, said to me out of the blue, "Anything can happen mum".
And right he is.
Last week started out like any other, Monday rolled around and Sol didn't go to school because he had a cough and sore throat. I took him to the doctors in the afternoon, throat infection confirmed and home we went with antibiotics.
10.30pm he awoke with fever and strong stomach pain. We had a very restless night and by morning the fever continued as did stomach pain and then came a bad headache. He looked really unwell.
I decided to take him to the local emergency department at 8am. To cut a longish story short we spent 30 nervous hours in hospital, including an ambulance drive to a larger hospital, where there were blood tests done to rule out serious bacterial infection, chest x-ray to rule out pneumonia, abdominal exams to rule out appendicitis, intravenous antibiotics, and saline to treat dehydration - all bases were being covered.
Thankfully, it was a nasty virus that lifted as quickly as it arrived.
I am beyond grateful for the medical care we received and that we have available in this country. Spending 24 hours in a paediatric ward is a very humbling experience, meeting seriously ill children and their parents is a stark reminder of how fortunate I am to have two healthy sons.
The nurses and doctors who work with these children and their families are well, earth angels. Their heartfelt care, and dedication to their work that involves supporting children and families through physical and emotional pain was remarkable to witness.
Now we're home. Enjoying the little things - fresh clothes, hot tea, catching up on sleep, a quiet house to work in, cuddling up and reading books, painting pictures, playing and of course cooking.
Sol is feeling wonderfully better, not fully back to himself (needing to have daytime naps!!) but definitely a million miles from where he was last Tuesday. Yes Sol, anything can happen. And for that reason it is so important we keep ourselves in check, don't sweat the small stuff, be grateful for the things that matter and remember to have fun! Don't let life become too serious.
Let's look at some links...
If you've ever cooked a meal that your child has turned their nose up at this post is for you.
That would be everyone who has ever cooked a meal for a child.
I LOVE this from Gourmet Girlfriend: 'Let's practice less comparison and more compassion'
It's no secret. I love Sarah Britton and I'm counting the days to get my hands on her cookbook
I made this apple cinnamon bread and butter pudding during the week and served it with custard. No faces pulled about that! I made a couple of substitutes to the recipe, I used spelt bread, and honey as the sweetener, and added a smattering of sultanas. But hey, knock yourself out and use the suggested 2 tablespoons of sugar :)
Holy nut milk! This is the only post you will ever need to read on DIY dairy free milk
I visited The Selby over the weekend for the first time in a long time. You could lose days over there.
A friend introduced me to a little slice of food blogging humour and happiness Lottie + Doof
And totally off the topic of food, if you need some help with getting the clutter out of your home this is a good place to start
Ok. A new week. Let's see what it brings!
ps Thanks for your patience with my inconsistent blogging. I'm going to a Problogger photography and blogging event in Melbourne next week - excited! Maybe I'll meet some of you there?

weekend reading
So sad to read of the passing this week of the beautiful, vibrant and inspirational Wellness Warrior, Jess Ainscough. Such a loss to so many people. Jess certainly lived her life to the fullest and leaves a lasting legacy of inspiration. Wishing peace to her family and friends in their grief.
Sigh.
I made this list earlier today before reading the news of Jess, some of it seems trivial to post in comparison to what I have written above but I post it for you to read another time or to take your mind somewhere else if it's been one of those weeks...
If you're a fan of Practicing Simplicity, click on over to Violet Journal and read an interview with Jodi about creativity and motherhood, plus a giveaway of Jodi's new book.
Anyone done Marie Forleo's B School or considering it? I haven't but I'm curious every year!
Writers, I've enjoyed discovering Canadian writer Sarah Selecky's site this week.
And more on writing, here's 10 Terrific Creative Writing Blogs from Copyblogger
Have you seen nutritionist Lola Berry's new book? The Happy Cookbook all recipes are sugar-free and gluten-free
I'm dreaming about a little blog design overhaul, any thoughts on Squarespace?
I love visiting Erin's blog
Pete and I enjoyed a lunch date today at Cakes & Ale in Sorrento, a bistro I am very happy to have in my neighborhood and to be doing some writing work for. More about that soon.
There's still time to sign up for Brenda and Naomi's Break Through program
And, if you're new to blogging I'd love to meet you at my Blogging for Beginners course on Saturday March 21st at Sorrento Community Centre. 10am-3pm. Cost: $60. Bookings: 03. 5984 3360
That's all for today. Wishing you all a beautiful weekend. Xx

weekend reading
Bloom nutritionist is my friend Lucy's site where you'll find delicious plant based recipes and beautiful photography
A great post from Georgia: How to resolve food intolerance
I actually made it to the movies to see Wild, have you seen it? Read the book? The suspense was intense at times but I loved it.
Its been getting a lot of circulation on social media, have you seen The Katering Show?
Check this out for a wholefood, dairy free version of macaroni cheese. Go on you'll be surprised.
Spiced lentil and mixed beetroot salad. Yes please.
It's a bit hot here at the moment for soup but this carrot one sounds delicious.
Melbourne people if you're near Collingwood let me introduce you to Rupert (the owners are close friends of my sis-in-law who gave me the heads up. I haven't been there yet but if you go let me know what you think!)
If you live on the Mornington Peninsula and are planning a party, wedding or event, call my friend Rachel at Feast Catering. She's super lovely and her food is oh so beautiful.
My friend Brenda, a health coach and blogger, is running her fantastic holistic health and weight loss program, Break Through! Your Ultimate Guide to Losing Stubborn Weight, again this year with her friend naturopath Naomi Judge. It was such a success last year, with hundreds of women not only losing weight but feeling empowered because they were educated to make better choices that work for their individual needs. The 28 day program starts on March 2nd and there is an early bird special of $99 available until Feb 25th. You can find out more and sign up here.
Ok that's a mixed bag of links there for you. Here's to a healthy, happy, productive week where I actually get back into the flow of posting regularly and on time here!
